DAVEY DELIVERS THE PERFECT SEASON
What a year it’s been for Davey Todd. He’s won on the roads, clinched his second national championship on the short circuits and then rounded off the year with a ‘win’ at Macau… without even racing a lap.
And it’s all made for exciting viewing for the Evotech Performance team, which has been behind him every step of the way this year – and we like to think we’ve played a small part in guiding him to that success, thanks to our work with both of his 2024 teams.
Todd’s season began with a change of colours and machinery as he joined the respected TAS Racing outfit to launch an assault on both the roads and the short circuits.
Running under the Cheshire Mouldings BMW by TAS Racing banner, he returned to the Pirelli National Superstock series in a bid to reclaim the title he won in 2022.
Alongside his BSB challenge, he was also signed to tackle a number of international road racing events this year, including the iconic Isle of Man TT and North West 200.
The year began – as expected – with the opening two Superstock round wins at Oulton Park and Donington Park, before he headed off to the North West in May, winning both Superstock races and the Supersport scrap, to be crowned Man of the Meeting at the end of the week.
From there it was on to the big one, the Isle of Man TT. After a few years learning the course, all eyes were on him this year to see if this was the season he would take his first TT win…and he didn’t disappoint.
He banked his first TT victory in the Superstock race and then went one better, adding his name to the list of road racing greats when he won the blue riband Senior TT to end the fortnight the best way possible.
Yet while it seemed he was on a roll and could do no wrong, from June onwards his short circuit season seemed to take a hit. He’d started the year dominating practice and qualifying before winning races by a country mile, but victory in the second race at Knockhill was to be his last one of the season.
As a result, the battle went all the way to the wire and it wasn’t until the final race at Brands Hatch that he was able to clinch his second title.
But the season wasn’t done yet. As early as August, rumours began to swirl that Todd was set for a move to FHO BMW for 2025 alongside Peter Hickman.
In late October, news leaked early that the Saltburn rider would be joining Faye Ho’s squad on one of its BMW M 1000 RRs for Macau in November. This looked to solidify the rumours of his move to the squad full time – rumours which were finally confirmed shortly after the team landed in Macau.
With next season sorted, Todd was able to go out at the famous road race and just enjoy it. He had little to prove – well, other than that he could beat Hickman on equal machinery – and he managed that in qualifying as he destroyed the field to claim pole, with Hickman third behind Finland’s Erno Kostamo.
However, fans will have to wait until 2025 to see how Todd and Hickman stack up on the same bike – because a downpour on race day left organisers with no alternative but to cancel the race, for the first time in the event’s history.
“I won my first Macau GP … without racing a single lap!” he joked. “We qualified on pole position with limited time on the new bike with a new team and all the boys did a fantastic job to get me comfortable so quickly to enable me to put that lap in during qualifying which inevitably meant the race victory!
“So, a massive thanks to the Faye and all the FHO BMW team by MGM for putting this all together last minute and it’s awesome to start our new relationship off in the perfect way. I can’t wait for 2025!”
As Todd moves to FHO, he remains with one of our supported teams and close neighbours – the team is based in Louth, not far from our Lincolnshire workshop.
It’s been fantastic to watch Todd – and all of our supported teams and riders this season – and with the racing now finally done for 2024, we’re all looking ahead to 2025 and what it could bring.
We can’t wait…can you?
