What is Spindle Bobbin Crash Protection?

Designed to protect the front wheel spindle and lower forks, EP Front Spindle Bobbins for the BMW R 1250 GS are a discreet addition to the front end.   Injection-moulded from matt black nylon, the bobbins are reinforced by an aluminium inner.   As the two materials are independent, the nylon slider is able to rotate with impact grab to reduce stress on the wheel and wear on the part.   To assist with installation, a replacement bolt machined with access for the spindle rod to fit through is provided.

Suspect Spindle Bolt

I attempted to fit this product to my BMW R1250GS. In the downloaded Instructions for this product, the advisory tightening torque for the spindle bolt is 30nm. Having set my torque wrench to this figure, I tightened the bolt and got nowhere near this torque figure when the bolt head snapped off with the thread remaining inside the spindle. What turned out to be a 2 minute job turned in to an all day affair when having to remove the front wheel to take out the wheel spindle. I then had to take this to a local engineering firm to remove the broken thread. This came out easily enough with a removal tool. I am hopeful that this is a one off occurrence as the front wheel bobbins fitted to my other bikes have been perfect. I requested a replacement bolt but unfortunately, there are none in stock at the time of writing. I would suggest that the tightening torque figure of 30nm is perhaps too great for the hollow securing bolt currently supplied with this kit.
