Cadwell Park, BSB ROUND 8 – Evotech Performance supported teams score top ten results
Evotech Performance’s home county of Lincolnshire provided the usual BSB thrills and spills when the BSB circus pitched up at Cadwell Park (17-19th) August for Round 8 of the 12-round series. Based in the undulating Lincolnshire Wolds, the mammoth crowds were expecting close racing and some big air from riders taking the Mountain section at full pelt. The mass of racing fans, families and friends didn’t leave disappointed.
For what seems like a regular occurrence, Leon, the son of Rocket Ron Haslam, took the win in race one and race two to leave the remaining competitors asking what they’ve got to do to rein in Haslam the younger. Deservedly so, Leon Haslam went home on Sunday evening wearing Cadwell Park’s “King of the Mountain” crown.
Race 1 of the Bennetts British Superbike Cadwell Park outing finished without a top three finish for Evotech Supported teams despite a freight train of bikes in the opening laps. DNF’s figured highly, though, as the pace intensified and the highest placed team was Be Wiser Ducati, with Glenn Irwin taking fourth at the flag. Tyco BMW rider Christian Iddon worked his S 1000 RR to a hard fought sixth place after seeing off riders from two more EP supported teams – Peter Hickman of Smiths Racing (seventh) and BSB rookie Tarran Mackenzie (McAMS Yamaha) who finished eighth. Mackenzie’s Mc AMS team-mate Josh Brookes took the final top ten position.
Race 2 went the same way as Race 1. Haslam, Bradley Ray and Jake Dixon having a serious ding-dong at the front, while the rest could only follow to watch Haslam eventually take the win. There was, however, a similar battle royale being played out by the top ten midfield players.
Peter Hickman scored fourth on his Smiths Racing BMW S 1000 RR. In touching distance of Hickman was Glenn Irwin of Be Wiser Ducati (fifth), himself closely followed – close enough to feel the Ducati’s exhaust blast – by the two S 1000 RR of Christian Iddon (sixth) and seventh placed Michael Laverty, both of Tyco BMW.
Lady Luck had already packed her bags at the beginning of Race 2 and started the slow walk to Silverstone GP circuit for the next BSB round, which was a bit of a bugger for the Mc AMS Yamaha squad. Both Brookes and Mackenzie DNF’d!
Here’s hoping Round 9 of BSB and Silverstone GP circuit’s tarmac are a little more accommodating to the EP supported teams. After all, it is the last round to score necessary points for qualification to the Showdown stage.
